Before Worldcon, I’ll be wearing author and academic hats at a couple of events in Glasgow and Lancaster. You can also find my latest Shoreline of Infinity column in the new CYMERA special issue, featuring Louise Welsh and Gareth L. Powell. *Update* Plus news of my first published essay in the new anthology from Galli Books!
Ludic Literature *Last Minute Addition*
Author event alert! Just confirmed I’ll be at the University of Glasgow next Tuesday for Ludic Literature: The Converging Interests of Writing, Games and Play. This two-day symposium over 16th – 17th July will cover intersections between game designing and creative writing, with academic papers sitting alongside creative discussions, plus a games jam on Day Two. I’ll be there on Day One, author hat on, as part of the Roundtable Discussion with authors and games designers. I’m looking forward to a really interesting and insightful chat about notions of play and playfulness in our different creative processes!

Embodying Fantastika
Academic hats on for this. As a warm-up for Worldcon, I’ll also be appearing at the Embodying Fantastika conference, taking place over 8th – 10th August at Lancaster University. On Saturday 10th Friday 9th, I’ll be presenting ‘What are Little Girls Made of? The Monstrous-Feminine Child in Frances Hardinge’s Cuckoo Song‘ (Abstract) – which explores disordered eating and different approaches to the abject in Frances Hardinge’s brilliant novel. I’m also looking forward to keynotes from the excellent Sherryl Vint and Sara Wasson, as well as the rest of a wonderful-looking programme from the team behind Fantastika journal. Thanks to the University of Glasgow School of Critical Studies Travel Support Fund for supporting my trip.

In the meantime…
Shoreline of Infinity
Shoreline of Infinity’s CYMERA special edition is out now! Containing an interview with Louise Welsh, an extract from Gareth L. Powell’s new guide to the craft About Writing, plus poetry from the excellent Angela Cleland, EM Faulds, Teika Marija Smits, DA D’Amico and more, it really is worth a read. There’s also the second part of my Further North column about my trip to Svalbard in January, and the value of having goals in creative work and how to navigate your way to them. Note: creative writing need not necessarily involve real polar bears.

*Update* Speculative Masculinities
I nearly forgot! Galli Books have also just announced the Table of Contents for their forthcoming Speculative Masculinities anthology of Fiction and Non-Fiction. I’m stunned to announce my first published essay will rub shoulders with work from S. Qiouyi Lu, A.C. Wise, Nino Cipri, Alasdair Stuart, and Charles Payseur.
More on that in due course, but for now, you can find the full contents list here.
