Ahead of Worldcon in Glasgow next week, my new story ‘Invitation’ is out now in ParSec Magazine, available from PS Publishing.
‘Invitation’ is set in a post-independence Scotland and explores perceptions of being British, English and Scottish in a post-Brexit world. As an English-born person who moved to Scotland in 2016, ‘Invitation’ is a first response to the political discourse surrounding both countries after the EU referendum – and how invitations aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. It’s a very difficult story for me, and I am absurdly proud of it.
‘Invitation’ is my first story for PS Publishing and marks a decade since Ian Whates last published a story of mine, BSFA award-winner ‘The Honey Trap’, which was recently reprinted in SF Caledonia. Excitingly, I’m also sharing this issue with Adrian Tchaikovsky, Aliya Whiteley, Ana Sun, Val Nolan, Ian McDonald, Chris Baker / Fangorn, Jared Shurin and Anne C. Perry, and the ever-underestimated Neil Williamson, so it’s definitely worth picking up.

As an electronic-only publication, I’m afraid there’s no print version of ‘Invitation’ as yet. However, the Glasgow SF Writers’ Circle will be launching the Gallus anthology, featuring another new story of mine called ‘The Badger’, on Friday 9th August at Glasgow Worldcon (and again at Waterstones Argyle ST on 29th August).
